Too soon? Law & Order caught filming episode about wrong-way Taconic crash

19 Oct

law and order taconic crash

The Law & Order franchise is known for its “ripped from the headlines” tagline and story structure, and hasn’t shied away from very contemporary true crime inspiration in the past.

Last week in Manhattan, the popular network drama caused a bit of a stir filming scenes for an episode about a fiery July 26th crash on New York’s Taconic Parkway. The disaster gripped local media because it took the lives of all but one in Diane Schuler’s packed minivan as well as three people in another vehicle. Eight people including Schuler died that day, with the sole survivor being her young son. Among the dead were Schuler’s children and three nieces. It was revealed soon after that Schuler was likely both drunk and high that morning.

Onlookers gathered at West 151st Street in Harlem near Adam Clayton Powell Blvd, and opined to the Post about whether the episode was in good taste. The violent and tragic deaths due to what was ostensibly a decision by one individual have deeply affected to New Yorkers, one of whom told the post it was “too soon,” and added, “those babies just died.” Others responded with a stereotypical New York laissez faire attitude:

But Harlem resident Juan Asuncion, 40, shruggingly said, “It’s probably way too soon to be doing this, but that’s the business these people are in.”

Some top names in TV to follow on Twitter

11 Oct

Twitter

While most of us would like to think that Twitter is the darling microblogging platform for techies the fact is that it has become very popular in the entertainment industry, and especially in television land. However just like every other demographic that uses Twitter it can be difficult to find the right people to follow.

To help us navigate this foreign territory The Wrap has published a list of the 50 best people in the television industry to follow on Twitter. You can see the complete list on their site but I have picked out my top choices from the list that I`d be interested in following – just to give you a sample of the complete list.

@shawnryan TV – Shawn Ryan, the man behind The Shield and the new hit Lie To Me

@sutterink – Kurt Sutter – responsible for some very blunt talk on Twitter as well as being behind the show Sons of Anarchy

@nealbaer – Neal Baer likes to send some scoops right from the set of Law & Order: SVU

@harthanson – Hart Hanson likes to talk about his hit show Bones with fans

@RyanSeacrest – Ryan Seacrest – ignoring the whole American Idol thing word is that Ryan is pretty plugged in and love to share breaking entertainment news as he hears it.

There`s a whole bunch more folk in the list so make sure you drop by and check it out. Who knows maybe you`ll find someone you want to follow.

Duggars keep breeding, grandchild Mackynzie Renee Duggar born to Josh and Anna

9 Oct

duggar grandchild

Oldest Duggar son Josh and wife Anna added the first arrow to their quiver officially last night, with the arrival of Mackynzie Renee Duggar.

Mackynzie was born late Thursday, weighing 8 lbs, 0 oz. Lucky Anna gets to have the whole TLC viewing population watch the childbirth ordeal on the latest installment of 18 Kids and Counting, entitled First Grandduggar. The baby was born at home with the assistance of a doula, a midwife and mother-in-law Michelle Duggar, who is expecting her 19th child next year. Awkward!

New baby Mackynzie can expect to be joined by her younger aunt or uncle next spring.

FLO TV Personal Television gets official: $250 plus a monthly fee you’ll never pay

6 Oct

You know, considering just how unappreciated FLO TV’s mobile television services are here in the US of A, you’d think the company would do its best to keep the losses at bay. For whatever reason, suits at the outfit have it in mind that the answer to their woes isn’t to throw in mobile TV gratis and find revenue streams from other sources, but to produce a dedicated TV that will only appeal to those looking to actually carry more portable devices with them. Brilliant, no? The oft-rumored FLO TV Personal Television finally got official tonight, with an aim to bring live and time-shifted content directly to the 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen for up to five straight hours on a single charge. To its credit, it weighs just 5 ounces and features an integrated kickstand and stereo speakers, but with a $249.99 price tag and a required $8.99 monthly plan (or more, if you’re not a fan of locking yourself into an absurd 3-year contract), we can’t exactly see this thing selling well. Or at all, really.

Jon Gosselin v. Nancy Grace

6 Oct

jon gosselin nancy grace

Good: Jon Gosselin gets his sniveling, Ed Hardy clad ass handed to him.

Bad: It’s by professional kvetch Nancy Grace. But if you can forget that for a moment, Grace really lays into Gosselin, calling him on his selfishness and college girl philandering. She basically calls him a liar, says both Jon and Kate are self-absorbed, and points out that he only wanted the kids off the show when he got booted. Watching him hem and haw at the end after Grace nails him for answering a question about the kids with a response about himself was fantastic. I suppose we can like Nancy Grace for a day.

My favorite part was Niecy Nash. That woman can say anything and be fabulous and compelling.

Screen Grabs: Instinct HD captures evidence in NCIS: Los Angeles

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

It seems that LL Cool J is still too hip to be seen rockin’ the latest and greatest from Samsung, but evidently Chris O’Donnell had no qualms doing the honors. The recently loosed Instinct HD was recently spotted handling all sorts of detective word on this week’s episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, with the famed HD movie mode showing itself on a number of occasions. Truth be told, though — we get how a guy of O’Donnell’s affluence could swing $250 for a new featurephone, but is the average agent seriously in the same tax bracket?

[Thanks, Josh]

Jon Gosselin Wants His Kids Off The Show

1 Oct

Jon Gosselin

After being fired from “Jon & Kate Plus Eight,” Jon Gosselin is firing a “cease and desist” to TLC. The infamous reality show patriarch wants to put a stop on the production of the show.

His attorney Mark Jay Heller told The Insider that Jon, who also put a stop on his divorce from Kate Gosselin, feels that his family is like a trainwreck waiting to happen.

TLC’s original agreement with the Gosselin family may be rendered null and void and enforceable because the channel never secured the special permits required by the Pennsylvania Child Labor Law as a “prerequisite” for the eight kids’ involvement in the show.

Jon also claims TLC “failed to designate the appropriate compensation to be allocated to the children” and “it may ultimately be determined that TLC has not provided for compensation for the eight children over the past four years.”

The news comes just a few days after the cable network announced they have reformatted their top-rating reality show to “Kate Plus Eight,” edging Jon from appearing in the reality series as a regular cast.

Heller clears that Jon has been considering to take his twins and sextuplets off the program for weeks prior to TLC’s announcement that they are changing the show’s title.

Screen Grabs: Dell’s Adamo keeps patient company on House

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Heads-up, folks: fall TV is in full swing, and the newest season of House M.D. has already delivered on more than one front. Aside from convincing you that a hospital really is no place to spend the majority of your day, Hugh Laurie’s money maker is also subtly whispering to you that a Dell Adamo would suit you just fine. The super sleek ultraportable managed to show its face on this week’s episode, and for any of you out there who doubt a glossy screen’s ability to double as a mirror, we’d say this primetime showing proves otherwise. Are matte panels not covered under Medicare, or what?

[Thanks, Steven]
