GeeksPhone One now available for pre-order, launching in Spain this December

21 Oct

Apparently not pushed back until January, GeeksPhone’s Android-imbued smartphone, the One, is launching in Spain this December, recently-added physical keyboard and all. So far, the limited edition run will not be crossing Spanish borders on its own, but we doubt that’ll stop any interested parties on foreign land. Final price will be 285 euro (US $427), 22 of which is all you need to put down to reserve yours today.

Verizon hosting Droid event on October 28

21 Oct

Verizon has yet to give a firm date on when we can all get our hands on some Droids, but we know one thing’s for certain: it’ll be fully revealed for the first time one week from today, October 28. The invitation that’s been extended to the media confirms that it’ll come from Motorola (of course), it’ll be Verizon’s “must-have device of the year,” and it’s got a very close association with giant, scary, glowing eyes. A far cry from Google’s friendly green bot, isn’t it?

Samsung Moment unboxed!

21 Oct

It’s here, folks. We’ll naturally have more impressions in the near future, but for now feast your eyes on the Samsung Moment and one of the least eventful unboxings of all time — Sprint sure isn’t packaging this like a premium handset, but at $179 we suppose it isn’t really pricing it like one either. The hardware itself might tell a different story, with a solid, hefty feel to it and great screen. So far our editors are divided on the keyboard, with Chris not being sure it meets up to the CLIQ’s standards, while this writer feels it’s far superior — not tiresome to press, but super clicky and very touch type-able. While we sort out this astonishing bit of intra-office drama, check out the unboxing shots in the gallery below. The phone goes on sale November 1st.

Raytheon deploying Android-powered RATS on battlefields in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Raytheon deploying Android-powered RATS on battlefields in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Android, Android everywhere. Android, Android in my hair. In my Nook and in my car, in my netbook and in my… wait, Afghanistan? It seems defense contractor Raytheon, creators of the famous “pain ray“, have launched a device called RATS: the Raytheon Android Tactical System. It allows soldiers to mark other soldiers and even UAVs as “buddies,” then track their position in real time on a map, even picking up streaming video coming from above — sort of like Latitude but putting a whole new spin on stalking. No word on how soldiers like their new devices so far, but once a Twitter app is added we’re sure they won’t shut up about it.

Dell Streak is a 5-inch Android 2.0 MID, packs 3G and WiFi (video)

21 Oct

Well, hello there! Those Dell MID rumors we’ve been hearing have finally received vindication in the form of a nice, picture-heavy leak courtesy of some industrious folks in Vietnam. What we know as of now is that there’s an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display (with multitouch zooming), WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity, all riding atop an Android 2.0 (aka, Donut Eclair) install. A dual-LED flash 5 megapixel camera adorns the back, and there’s a 1,300mAh battery to power all that goodness. See pics below and a video awaits after the break, where an old friend of ours plays with the jumbo smartphone.

Motorola Droid ads invading mailboxes, too?

20 Oct

Because television and the internet can’t be the only media feeling the touch of the Droid’s marketing blitz, it looks like promotional mailers are being sent out. No new details or screenshots, but you can’t get enough of Motorola / Verizon’s Android device anyway, can you? A few more pics past the read link.

Watch Spring Design Alex push the web to e-reader format (video)

20 Oct

This is frankly a pretty cool little feature of Spring Design’s I-swear-I’m-not-Nook-but-oh-the-timing e-reader / Android hybrid, Alex. Browse to whatever web article / Google book / Wikipedia entry you want to enjoy, press the center button, and watch as Alex “prints” the page to the e-reader screen up top for a more comfortable reading experience. We’ll admit we’re a bit surprised to see a working model already — hopefully this is a sign of good things to come sooner rather than later. Video after the break.

Motorola ‘Calgary’ to bring BLUR to Verizon, Droid not looking worried

20 Oct

The Droid’s shaping up to be a beast of an Android phone — well played, Verizon — but Motorola’s banking much of its future on its MOTOBLUR platform, which the Droid curiously lacks (though Android 2.0 adds at least some of BLUR’s functionality back in). Don’t worry, though — Verizon hasn’t forgotten about BLUR altogether, and the rumored Calgary is looking to arrive as the carrier’s next Android phone from Moto featuring BLUR in all its social network-aggregating glory. It’s clearly positioned as a lower-end device than the Droid, stepping down to a 3 megapixel cam but still managing nifty features like an optical pad, 3.5mm jack, and naturally, a full QWERTY keyboard. Considering Rubin’s ties to Danger, you could think of this as the ill-fated Sidekick Slide all grow’d up. Word has it this might hit before the end of the year, so we’ll see just how much breathing room Verizon and Moto feel like giving the Droid before coming back for Round 2, eh?

Android 1.6 retrofitted onto Samsung Q1 UMPC (video)

20 Oct

Too busy to bother with buying an Android-powered Archos 5? Then you’re probably way too busy to bother with this here hack. But just in case you’ve got a morning you can wipe clean and a few afternoons where you can scoot out early, it’s apparently possible to load up an Android 1.6 port onto one’s Samsung Q1 UMPC. Kevin at jkOnTheRun did just that over a relaxing weekend, and while he’s still struggling to get the touchscreen to act right, most everything else seems to be humming along sans issue. Eager to see if it’s something you’d be into? Hop on past the break and mash play — it’s twelve minutes in heaven, ladies.
